Wow! We have been looking forward to the holidays for a long time (a whole year!) and they have flown by so quickly and not the way we had planned at all. It was quite ironic too, because Lance and I had talked about how this year we wanted to start new traditions as a family. I
guarantee, these are not the traditions we plan to continue. So here are the updates for all the chaos.
Kiersten- For those who hadn't heard- she was admitted to Timp hospital on 12/23 for gastroenteritis. She had thrown up 17 times in an 8 hour period and started having diarrhea in addition. So they had to give her 3 IV bags and by the end of the second, she wanted to get up and play and was starting to act more like herself. By the time Dr. Simmons came to see her at 3:00 p.m., she had all the spunk back in her and was acting okay. The only problem is that she was still hooked up to the IV and wasn't hydrated enough yet, so he wanted to keep her through the night (Christmas Eve). He is a doctor I (Rachel) work with, so I told him I wanted to take her home. So we ended up coming up with this agreement. We would stop the IV. If she didn't throw up any more and she kept down at least 2 oz every 1/2 hour (and she had to drink the 2 oz. whether she wanted to or not) for 3 hours and if she could then we could go home! So Lance and the boys came to be with us and the kids played while Lance and I tried to trick her into drinking. She did throw up a tiny bit, but when it came to report back to Dr. Simmons, he said we could go home! So anyway, we ended up celebrating Christmas Eve with dinner at Winger's (one of the very few restaurants open still) and then going home and singing carols, putting on a good movie for the kids, and getting ready for Santa to come. We did finally make it to see our families on Christmas Day and on the 26th. She is doing well now and you would never guess she was even sick. Mikey-he had been complaining of a tooth ache on 12/29 and we just brushed him off and gave him some Tylenol. Well on New Year's Eve he woke up with a horrible tooth ache that had him in tears. I (Rachel) had went to work during the day so we could be off together at night. Lance, luckily, had taken the day off, so he arranged an appointment with the dentist we had just seen 3 weeks prior, and was told all was well. Well, to make a long story shorter, we took him in and they did x-rays that showed 3 cavities! One of which was causing all the pain and trouble, and had been filled just 6 months prior to this. He had to have a pulpotomy(?- something to that effect- but it is kind of like a root canal just not as deep). Somehow during the procedure, something happened and he ended up with a HUGE hematoma (blood clot) in his cheek. He was in so much pain and the dentist just told us to keep him on Motrin and soft foods for a few days. Even after 48 hours, he was still in tons of pain and nothing was helping, and the swelling was worse. We called the dentist and he said to give him a little more time, and if not he needed to see him again. Mikey started to do a little better, but every time he is even brushed on that side of his cheek he screams in pain. Poor guy. Well, we took him in this morning and he has a bad infection in his gum and has to be on oral antibiotics for a week or so. But we have to get him better or he will have to have that tooth pulled, which would not be good, because the replacement doesn't come until he is 11 or 12 years old. On a positive note, he was feeling well enough to want to go to school after today's chaos. So I take that as a good sign. Luke-has a mild stomach bug in his system, but that does not stop him for climbing, playing, screaming, laughing, and just being his cutie self. He is doing well, and we plan to keep it that way!!!Well, I hope that gets everyone up to date. If any questions, just post a comment, and I can answer it for you. But hopefully we have had our trials for today/week/month/year. (Yeah right!) Thank you to everyone for their love and concern. We sure appreciate all you did to make our holidays wonderful. We Love you!
